Laser Therapy for the Feet

A Patient's Journey with MLS Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy Details

When a physical condition or injury affects your mobility or quality of life, you have one goal: to return as quickly as possible to everyday activities. Foot & Ankle LA is proud to be on the medical technology forefront by offering MLS Laser Therapy. The doctors and staff have invested in the very best technology as a key component of our continuing quest to offer you the finest in health care.

Overview

MLS (Multiwave Locked System) Laser Therapy is the use of two specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions. These wavelengths work together to enhance each other, resulting in increased reduction of inflammation and pain.

MLS Laser Therapy has been approved by the FDA and proven successful as evidenced by extensive and credible studies conducted in our country’s finest institutions, including Harvard. The laser causes no heat or light damage to the patient, and can be set for each particular patient’s anatomy and diagnosis.

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy uses light to favor and accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. The laser beam is moved over the skin so that the light energy (photons) penetrates the tissue where it interacts with various molecules (chromophores) that cause different biological effects. It produces a photochemical, photothermal and photomechanical effect.

There are many types of lasers.  Each laser has different characteristics which produce a different effect.  These characteristics include:

  • Energy: measured in joules
  • Time: Defined as the duration of irradiance of target tissue and is measured in seconds.  It is also known as Impulse Duration or called “impulse width”.
  • Wavelength: Penetration depth is directed by the laser emission wavelength and the type of tissue (chromophores).
  • Frequency: Defined as the number of impulses emitted during the unit of time (1 second) and should reflect the condition treated.
  • Power: the rate at which energy is delivered and is measured in watts.
  • Fluence: Energy Density or Dose
  • Irradiance (Also known as Power Density): Power delivered per unit area
  • Emission Mode: Continuous Wave (CW) or Pulsed Wave (PW)
  • Impulse Duration: Duration of laser emission, also called “impulse width”.

What to Expect

Treatment sessions typically take around 15 to 20 minutes to complete. During the treatment, the MLS laser system will deliver a steady beam of laser energy that will be passed over the skin along the treatment area. The laser energy penetrates the tissue and stimulates circulation and the tissue healing process.  The patient may experience a soothing, warm sensation at the point of application; this identifies the beginning of an 18-24 hour process of modulated cellular activity, leading to decreased inflammation and pain. Some patients say they feel a comfortable warm sensation, while others say they feel nothing at all. Most importantly, there is no pain or uncomfortable feeling experienced during or after the treatment.

The number of treatments needed will vary per patient/issue. Some patients may be seeking care for an injury to the foot, while others may be suffering from long-standing chronic foot pain. The average patient will need around six to ten treatments.
